Smith, Malkin, Perron named NHL's 'Three Stars'

02/13/2012 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, Pittsburgh center Evgeni Malkin and St. Louis left wing David Perron have been selected as the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending February 12.

Smith won each of his four starts last week with a league-best goals-against average of 0.74 and a .975 save percentage to earn the First-Star honor. He yielded just one goal in each of his first three starts, then turned aside 38 shots in a 3-0 whitewash of Chicago on Saturday.

The 29-year-old netminder has a career-best 23 wins and .925 save percentage in 44 appearances for Phoenix this season.

Malkin was chosen as the Second Star after leading all skaters with eight points in three games last week. He notched three goals with five assists and posted a plus-six rating. His stellar weekend included a goal and four assists in Saturday's victory over Winnipeg and two goals in Sunday's triumph over Tampa Bay.

The 2008-09 NHL scoring champion leads the league with 69 points this season.

Perron picked up the Third Star after leading the league with six goals in four games last week. He scored at least once in each game, including two-goal efforts in wins over Ottawa and Colorado.

The most interesting game of the opening week will feature the NFC champion Bears as they hit the road to take on the NFL’s top team during last year’s regular season, the San Diego Chargers.
